Here is something else to consider when searching certain web site. Who is paying for these web sites and why? Time Warner and AOL own a large portion of online and media sites. They also own large amounts of our news media. SO whats the problem? Consider what you read. Why is it written they way it is? Is the information biasis? Some of the sites I have personally looked at while researching this topic, I have found to be full of placement advertising and biasis to the advertisers paying for the site. Of course the network company who is a republican supporter, will be biasis when writing an online magazine about the Democratic Convention! So my question is; will one consider that online magazine good research material? Is this online magazine a reliable source? If you are telling yourself “no” when you read this than you are correct! CNN is owned by Time Warner/ AOL. If you like CNN News and think it fair journalism you might be correct; although some Republicans feel CNN is biasis to the Democratic thinking process. On the other hand Democrats fee the Fox News is a Republican favored news network. The point I am trying to make is this; both of these networks are not reliable sources! They are incentive based sources paid by sponsers to sell products and support the advertisers views. So how can one know what is a reliable new agnecy? Thats another topic! To find less biasis journalism one might want to use the library and go to sources such as scholoary research articles or magazines. These reserach articles are mostly published by top scholars and not funded for personal profit or to sell something.

There are over 4 billion plus unique wedsites and only 6% of these sites have educational content. The average life of a webpage these days is around 75 days. Google, the largest search engine, has indexed less than 18% of the available pages. A great deal of the internet is not available to be indexed by traditional search engines, and remains hidden from them. This is known as the invisible or deep web. Anyone can publish a web page. noone checks that the information is correct, current or able to be authenticated. There are unpleasent sites on the internet although, these make up less than 1% of all web pages. ( www. warrriorlibrarian.com) Now lets consider that sources in a library. They have all been individually selected by a trained professional to cater specifically to the schools educational programs. A catalogue of the library resources exists, so that anyone can find everything in the library. A teacher /librarian is always there on hand to help you find the information you need and can interpret difficult concepts and locate information from beyond the physical library. (www. warriorlibrarian.com).

So all this and you still want to use the internet as your main source! Consider all the time you will consume looking at useless sites until you find one that is somewhat accurate! Here is a simple compare and contrast outline for you to consider:

Library-

uses a universal cataloging system

houses professional books, newspapers, magazines, and other resources that have been edited and reviewed prior to publication

provides access to to free journals, magazines, newspapers, encyclopedias, and other print references.

Has archived materials that go back many years

Has electronic resources

Knowledgeable reference librarians

library publications cannot provide up to date the minute news and information the way web sites can although they do have accurate past news

setback- libraries close!

Internet:

Open 24/7

web sites can be constantly updated

provides 2 way communication through e mail and news groups

some sites feature rare books, documents, and special collections that traditionally have only been available in libraries

Offers a multimedia experience

no system of catalogs

RELIABILITY OF INFORMATION IS NOT GUARANTEED

Some electronic information are only available through subscription

internet access is often not free

Does not have knowledgeable librarians who can help you find resources that you need.

So you travel into you local college library, only to find shelves and shelves of books but, are they all reliable sources? The answer is “no”. Why are they in the library then? Its simple. Beware of this when you are researching. Just like you are going to the store for milk, check the dates of publication. Never thought of that? What if you are researching the benefits of stem cells? You find a text in the library and it is titled “all about the stem cell”. You think, “this is it”! Then you look at the copywrite and you suddenly see it is not at all going to be a reliable source. The copyrite of this book is 1942. Why is it not reliable? no brainer folks, with the evolution of medical research this book will do you no good! So even though it WAS a literary source it is outdated, making it old news – not reliable! Depending on what you research copyrite is very important. Take for example literary criticism. When researching a topic like Milton the criticism changes dramatically over the centuries. In other words, with the changing times reliable resources change with it.

Just type in what you want to know and magically you will find your answer. But, is it the correct one and how reliable is it? First thing to look for when looking for a reliable source on the internet is where its coming from. There are several sites but their endings give them away. URL addresses usually mean how reliable your source might be. An EDU ending ususally means it is coming from and educational place where it might be reliable, Although, it could be bias depending on what institution it is coming from. If the URL site ends in GOV it means it is from the government and is reliable and is a good source. A URL site ending in ORG could be a reliable but, because it is coming from a nonprofit organization it could also be not so reliable. For example, ORG site could mean it is coming from PBS or other news agencies that are reliable. Also, ORG sites can come from journals or other scholary magazines or even bibliographies. The most important term to remember when one is researching is to use scholarly material. The best place to find scholarly material is in the library or on a scholarly wedsite such as JSTOR or other sites. Even on JSTOR you could be at risk of being scamed with nonscholarly sites. Site like USA Today or news sites can be considered entertaining but, not scholarly. Why? Just look at the news on TV and one will see certain channels are bias and are politically motivated.

I have decided to do my Ted Talk on the importance of research. Most students today rely on the internet as their source of information, but what they do not understand is the internet while entertaining, is not considered a reliable source. More and more people are going online to research paper topics, health care needs, medical advice, and other important needs and wants. But you wouldnt trust a total stranger to give you advice on how to cure ring worm or what medications I should give my children, so why trust the internet? I came to this topic because of my teacher in college and a class I took called Literature research. The entire class was ten questions. Ten questions you could not answer on the internet. These were no basic questions, they were questions like, “who was Lucy Stoner and what did she do during her time that impacted a certain group” Each answer had to be 1000 words or more and you must give 10 sources on where you got your information from. It had to be a reliable literary source, journal,or online journal. No google, yahoo search, or metacrawler! I believe that semester I spent over 100 hours in the Stockton library! When I was done with the questions, about 50 pages later, just for fun I googled them. What I saw was a biggest lesson of the class. The answers were close but, not at all correct. I started to wonder what are children learning if they are using the internet as their source of information? I got a chill down my neck and wondered, will this change history, will the internet create a fictional reality?

In my experience with children they seem to respond better to what they like. In a perfect world a teacher can make a lesson plan based on every students interest in the classroom.

But, that is not possible or is it? Can there be a common ground when learning literature and learning about famous rock stars? Perhaps, the teacher can integrate both worlds into the lesson. The lesson no matter what the lesson is, should be based on critical thinking skills.

For example, Sting is a rock star but also a literature teacher. If I were that literature teacher I might give the option of the students picking a Sting song to write about or perhaps do a writing sample on Sting’s past life.

The point I am attempting to make is this, If the student is interested in the subject than the result might be a really good thoughtful paper. To be able to debate, argue, and make a point is really a sign of being intelligent. So, I do agree with Graff’s article.

I have been in classes where the teacher’s passion for Milton is not the same as 90% of his class. Although, I like Milton, he is not in my top ten reading selections to pick from. But, it is important to understand Milton and other literature greats to understand history. Even if I didnt like Milton I had to pass his class to graduate and there was no way to relate Milton to sports so I could focus better! I had to teach myself how to appreciate Milton for what he was and also learn from his writing style.

So, although it is a great idea to give your students the option to learn what they want it does not really teach them what you need in the real world. When students go out in the real world they will encounter parts of their life they will have no interest in at all. How will they deal with these issues if they have not trained themselves to learn from things that might not interest them?

I believe it is important to have a happy medium when teaching students. You cannot just pick cool subjects to talk about. A good teacher should be able to interest their students on various issues the class is learning about and compare and contrast the issues with possible current ones the students can relate to in their own lives.

There will always be a student or two that will be interested in just what they want to be interested in. I do not believe that just giving into what ever they want to do is the answer. Like I said before, the goal should be to interest your students on learning the subject at task and if possible relating it the student’s world.

The landmark case of Brown v. Board of education created a new life for colored people across this country. It impacted not just schools but life in general for the black community.

In schools

When things finally began to come together with integration; more black students were continuing their educations allowing them to become professionals. This case didn’t only affect public schools but also colleges had to integrate. In today’s world; there still is segregation but it is not instituted by the law, it is sadly based on income.

I do believe that segregation created this set back in blacks and whites being unequal as far as on a economic scale. Schools are now challenged with different segregation issues

Diversity in schools have grown. Some schools in our area in New Jersey have as many as 57 different nationalities in them. Still there are more white students enrolled in schools in this area than any other race. Today’s schools find themselves struggling to provide equal education to all students creating them to have multiple translators, and ELS classes to adjust to this growing demand.

Looking at the charts from the Press article one can see different areas house more white students or more black students. In Atlantic City some schools are 97% black while a school a few streets away could be 80% Spanish and yet another could house 60% Asian. Why does this happen? My opinion is neighborhoods where people choose to live. Is this self segregation then?

I picked my neighborhood because the schools are good. But I know it is expensive to live in my neighborhood and the median income is close to 100,000 a year. In the city on the other hand the median income is 30,000 a year and most households are single parent. Most people that live in these poor neighborhoods are foreign or of ethnic backgrounds. So to answer my own question, they did not choose to live in these neighborhoods it is where they can afford to live. So economic segregation is the new form of segregation and unfortunately schools in these poor districts tend to perform at a lower level than in the wealthier neighborhoods.

Why do these schools do poorly? I am doing my fieldwork at NY ave. school in A.C.. It is 97% black. The school is beautiful inside and out, but it is in the middle of a high crime neighborhood and section 8 housing development. In the NJ testing data for NJASK8 in the 07-08 only 39.5% of the students scored proficient out of the states average of 69.9%. And only 1.3% scored at an advanced level. What I don’t understand is the school is new, has Apple computers enough for every student, and is teaching classes using the same books and technology as an almost all white district such as Linwood schools.

I believe that the economic status of the AC kids home life clearly shows that these students are not achieving high scores due to the environment in which they are growing up in. I believe this is caused by years of previous segregation before Brown and the black community is still trying and suffering because of it. It is just in recent years that black professionals are striving and looking at the charts from the Press article one can see a change in area living segregation is changing, and more diverse groups are coming into once named white neighborhoods. This clearly could have never happened if the Brown case never came about. So, to sum it up, Brown didn’t just change they way black children attend schools it changed an entire thinking pattern and gave way to break a economic barrier.
